MID-Shell for Windows© Embedded CE 6.0
Lately the market has been witnessing rapid growth in popularity of various MID devices and Netbook computers. For the most part these devices work on the Linux operating system, which offers several specialized variations of itself that are geared for such devices. The only alternative that device manufactures offer is Microsoft Windows© XP, which more or less only runs on high-end device models (equipped with a large amount of memory and hard disks). For the low and middle level models (usually equipped with low-cost SSD disks) no alternative to Linux exists. Microsoft does have Windows© Embedded CE 6.0 operating system in its arsenal, which could become an excellent platform for building solutions that will be able to compete with and win over Linux. The idea behind this project is to make these solutions available to device manufacturers and end-users.
This project consists of creating several totally open (meaning accessible to both computer user enthusiasts as well as computer manufacturers) and operable builds based on Windows© Embedded CE 6.0 that will work on several popular platforms. We are starting with the following devices: Aspire One, Lenovo IdeaPad 9.
All system components, device drivers, operating system shell, and additional applications (excluding those contained in the Windows© Embedded CE Platform Builder) are accessible in the form of source code with licenses permitting their free usage, modification and distribution of derivative versions.
The next phase of the project will be a new specialized version of the operating system shell (as an enhancement to the standard explorer style shell) for MID devices. This new version will be based on the standard components that are included in Windows© Embedded CE.
The last phase of project is releasing a SDK for developers who will then be able to use it to create their own applications for this platform.
